Brymo the guy behind the Oleku chorus was named Ibrahim Olawale from where he coined his name “Brymo”. He is fondly called “son of a carpenter” by his friends.
This chocolate city’s golden boy was formerly signed to Bujoc records where he recorded his first album titled BRYM STONE.
The album did poorly in the market but made a small hit titled shorty that earned him a nomination at the then Hip Hop World awards.
I was first attracted to his posters on the streets of
Okokomaiko in Lagos and became more curious when I learnt we were both undergraduates of the Lagos state university (LASU) where he studied zoology but he unfortunately dropped out at the end of our 100 level days.I remember the first time we talked about his album which I said was good but did not sound Nigerian which he argued in the negative.
I picked up interest in his musical career and watched him rehearse on the streets of Okokomaiko with his guitar and work out at the local hood gym. No doubt he was good but wondered why such a promising artist would drop out of school without any major achievement.
My younger brother Lil Lurge (a rapper) instantly became a big fan and developed a good rapport with him and Brymo had promised collaboration with him on a song.
I heard a song he did with chocolate city’s Jesse Jagz which I liked and then I heard rumours of collaboration with Brymo and M I.
The climax came when I heard his interview on radio with Ice Prince during the promo of their song Oleku and I realized he had finally become a”choc boy” which means an artiste on the chocolate city label.
In Brymo’s words at the Oleku street Jamz in Okokomaiko December 2010, he said “I de my house na him MI call me o and I say which kind liar be dis …… But today my story don change”.
Brymo has finally become a star and now has collaborations with all choc boys - MI, Jesse Jagz and Ice prince and other artistes including 2shotz and Sasha. He has been touring outside the country with the chocolate city crew and just returned from Malaysia where he did a show with Ice prince.
I might be partial but somebody should tell him he still owes Lil Lurge a “collabo”.
